Michelle Shocked came on the scene with her "Short Sharp Shocked" album in 1988 and recorded four albums for the Mercury label. They were unlike anything else around at the time, a little bit country, a little bit old-time, and more than a little bit feminist punk. Broadening her musical horizons meant disentangling herself from the big-time music industry. That turned out to be a difficult process, but a worthwhile one: Michelle's last few shows in southeastern Michigan have been one-of-a-kind experiences that have drawn on her experiences singing with the gospel choir at a black Pentecostal church in Los Angeles. She has been writing music at a furious pace for the last decade, some of it personal, some of it political, and the one sure thing is that every Michelle Shocked show will bring something new.
